Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, at least 13 journalists have been killed for their work as journalists. With this, the number of journalists killed has reached 58. Apart from the Gaza Strip, 45 journalists were killed till December 1, 2023. During this period, 521 journalists are living in prison around the world. This is a decrease of 8.4 percent compared to 2022.

Globally, the number of journalists killed on the job or in the course of their work has been decreasing for a long time.

According to the report, among the reasons for this are the adoption of security measures in news organizations, the training of protective equipment, the journalists taking precautions, the impact of the fight against impunity, the actions of inter-governmental organizations and the work of non-governmental organizations.

During this period, there has been an overall decline in the number of journalists killed in the line of duty or in the line of work.

In the last five years, there has been a gradual decline in the number of journalists killed in the course of their work.

In Latin America, there has been a significant decline in the number of journalists killed in the course of their work.

For journalists, war zones are seen as more dangerous than peaceful countries. This year, 23 journalists have been killed while reporting on war zones. For the first time in five years, more journalists have been killed in war zones than in peace zones.

The largest number of journalists in the world are kept in prisons in China, Belarus and Myanmar. China has once again become the country that imprisons the most journalists in the world. Where 121 media professionals are living in captivity. This is about a quarter of the journalists detained worldwide.- RSF
